Lon Simmons, miner in the southern Indiana coal region, wants to give his four children away. Simmons has been out of work since last April and has tuberculosis. It is doubtful if he will ever work again, doctors, say.

“I can’t make a living for my children,” Simmons says. “I’d rather they had a good home with plenty of food and warmth, and a chance to go to school than to live here and watch me die by inches.”

Simmons is show with his children and his old mother.
