35 Vintage Photos Capture Everyday Life in Hungary During the 1960s

Life in Hungary during the 1960s was shaped by a combination of Soviet influence, post-World War II recovery, and the legacy of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.

While the country was officially under Communist rule, it was also experiencing a period of relative relaxation within the broader context of Eastern Bloc politics, a time often referred to as “Goulash Communism” after János Kádár, who became the country’s leader after the 1956 uprising.
Life was a mix of state control and a gradual shift toward more personal and economic freedoms than many other countries in the Eastern Bloc. Here below is a set of vintage photos from Zsolt Gyurko that shows what life looked like in Hungary during the 1960s.
