Migrant hostels provided temporary accommodation for refugees, or displaced persons, arriving in South Australia from Europe after World War II as well as other assisted migrants.
Post war immigrants contributed significantly to the large population growth within South Australia during the second half of the twentieth century.
The hostels that appear here were situated at Gepps Cross, on the corner of Main North Road and Grand Junction Road, and at Elder Park, on the banks of the River Torrens not far from where the Adelaide Festival Centre now stands.
