In the late 1990s, Winona Ryder embodied a distinctive blend of edgy and elegant style, often seen in sleek, minimalist black dresses, leather jackets, and tailored blazers. Her dark, cropped hair and bold brows framed her face, giving her an iconic look that resonated with the grunge and alternative fashion movements of the time. Ryder was also known for her roles in movies like Alien: Resurrection (1997) and Girl, Interrupted (1999), showcasing her talent in roles that often conveyed complex, introspective characters. Her style from this era remains a staple in 1990s nostalgia fashion.

These rarely seen Polaroids shine a new light on ’90s icon Winona Ryder. Many of the photos were taken by Robert Rich, former Vice President of public relations for fashion designer Marc Jacobs’ eponymous label.
“I’ve always been a fan,” Rich told CNN in an interview. “And I had just seen Girl, Interrupted when she came (into the Marc Jacobs store). That’s how we became friends. I just went up to her and started talking about it.”
There are no captions or timestamps for any of the images, mainly because Rich, by his own admission, failed to make detailed notes. “I wish I had dated them. But I would just take the Polaroids, put them in my back pocket and let them develop that way. I wasn’t sitting down (categorizing them). I just put them in shoe boxes under my desk, or hung them on the wall if there was a good one. It was very spontaneous.”
