Intimate Vintage Photos Capture the Love of Alain Delon and Romy Schneider

Once a golden couple, the romance between Alain Delon and Romy Schneider was highly publicized at the time. They fell in love during the filming of Christine in 1958. On March 20, 1959, the couple announced their engagement during their stay at the villa owned by Schneider’s parents in Switzerland. Schneider was introduced to Italian director Luchino Visconti by Delon, and together the couple gave performances in the Théâtre de Paris in John Ford’s stage play ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore, a Visconti’s production which broke box office records in 1961.

Unfortunately, during their relationship, Delon had an affair with German entertainer Nico. In December 1963, Schneider and Delon decided to break their engagement, although they remained life-long friends and continued to work with each other in films such as La Piscine (1968), and The Assassination of Trotsky (1972).
