Italian lifestyles in the 1950s are best remembered as glamorous thanks to the cinematic contributions of Sophia Loren and Federico Fellini. Conversely, the lifestyles are also remembered for the crushing poverty reflected in the eyes of the neorealist films of Roberto Rossellini. The truth is pretty close to the lives reflected in both of those types of films.

Italians of the 1950s saw an economic explosion that resulted in the rise of living standards. Despite this rise, many southern Italians remained in poverty necessitating moves to the more prosperous north.
