It’s been more than 20 years since Clueless hit theaters, and we still feel nostalgic every time we see Cher’s game-changing yellow plaid ensemble or hear the catchphrase “as if!” These rare snapshots of film’s stars like Alicia Silverstone, Brittany Murphy, Paul Rudd, and more, were taken by the makeup supervisor Alan Friedman.
When Clueless first hit the box office on July 19, 1995, it was a sleeper hit that ranked number two its opening weekend, right after Apollo 13. It would eventually make $56 million domestically—not bad for a film that cost about $12 to $13 million to make. It developed a fervent cult over time that has only grown as millennial nostalgia for the ’90s has been cresting.
It was Paramount Pictures that saw the potential of Amy Heckling’s script; a modern, sugar-coated take on Shakespeare’s Emma. Fresh-faced Alicia Silverstone nabbed the leading role as sartorially inclined matchmaker Cher Horowitz, leaving behind her former role as three-time Aerosmith video girl for an unshakeable cinematic legacy with decidedly more plaid.
The result was a highly-quotable, seriously stylish romantic comedy, often hailed the greatest teen movie of all time. But behind the film’s wit, well-crafted characters, and pitch-perfect costume design was a cast full of stars.
Not only was there room for Silverstone, the late Brittany Murphy, Paul Rudd, Donald Faison and Breckin Meyer but some incredible performances from Stacey Dash as ‘Dionne Marie Davenport’ and Elisa Donovan as ‘Amber’ to compliment a magnetic ensemble.
No better way to see the starry potential of the group of relative youngsters than through these candid shots of the cast through the instant medium of Polaroid. The sparkling personalities of the actors in the shots and the characters they’re portraying shine through these instantaneous images.
