In the 1970s, German actress Elke Sommer (November 5, 1940 – October 28, 2026) transitioned her career into European cult films, British sex comedies, and frequent American television appearances. While her peak Hollywood leading-lady era was in the 1960s, she remained highly active across multiple mediums throughout the decade.

As major Hollywood offers slowed down, the multilingual actress worked extensively in Europe such as: Percy (1971), Zeppelin (1971), Baron Blood (Gli orrori del castello di Norimberga, 1972), The House of Exorcism (Lisa e il diavolo, 1973/1975), Carry On Behind (1975), The Swiss Conspiracy (1976), and The Prisoner of Zenda (1979).
She became a frequent, charismatic guest on American network television, making regular appearances on game shows like Hollywood Squares, Match Game, and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, as well as episodic roles on shows such as The Muppet Show (1977) and The Love Boat.
Having painted since childhood under the pseudonym E. Schwartz, Sommer began exhibiting and selling her artwork more formally in the 1970s. Her distinctive neo-naive art style earned commercial success and gallery shows across North America and Europe.
In 1978, she released an early celebrity fitness project titled Elke Sommer: The Inner and Outer Beauty Program, featuring exercise routines, health tips, and workout audio records long before the 1980s celebrity fitness boom.
