Back in the 1960s, when teenage girls in America and England fantasized about romance with their favorite Beatle, Cynthia Powell Lennon held the position so many girls dreamed of — she was married to John Lennon.

Cynthia met John Lennon while they were students at the Liverpool College of Art. The two married in 1962, shortly before The Beatles became global superstars. They had a son, Julian Lennon, in 1963. During this time, she was primarily based at their home in Weybridge, Surrey, where she tried to maintain a relatively normal life for herself and Julian.
Though she was not deeply involved in The Beatles’ public life, she witnessed many pivotal moments of their career, including the band’s meteoric rise, their experimentation with fame, and John Lennon’s increasing involvement with Yoko Ono.
Cynthia and John’s marriage ended in divorce in 1968, as his relationship with Ono intensified. Despite their divorce, Cynthia remained an important figure in the early Beatles story, and her influence on John’s life during this critical period was profound.
