The 1964 Dodge Charger Hemi concept was created by Chrysler to rival the Pontiac GTO, with a powerful 7-liter V8 engine taken from their NASCAR racing program. Although the concept car did not feature the 426 Hemi V8 engine, it eventually made it into the production Dodge Charger, which debuted in 1966.
The concept car was designed around the Chrysler Polara, which underwent a complete redesign to create the Dodge Charger concept, essentially a disguised Polara. The production version of the Charger was a two-door coupe, unlike the roadster-style concept car. The Dodge Charger has since become an American muscle car legend, with seven generations produced.
