Leading a revolution of artistic discovery in the early sixties, Andy Warhol was ahead of the times when it came to the commerciality of celebrity. He notably predicted the selfie culture and social media society we live in today with his coined phrase.
Although selfies can seem narcissistic, for twentieth-century artists they became a way to experiment. Surrealists like Man Ray frequently used them to create altered versions of their own image, while Andy Warhol immortalized his face using a Polaroid camera.
